how to charge service fee ?

This is for my friend who has started practising interior designing.Heard that fee is based on percentage.So will it cover the furniture design,painting, other help done for the client in setting up the area or furniture part alone ?What is the current trend in charging ? For small areas which is ideal,percentage or square feet.

The most common fee arrangement is based on an hourly rate for the time actually spent, possibly with a guaranteed maximum. If it is based on a percentage basis, it is usually about 10% of all improvements performed including the furniture. It is possible to charge on a per square foot basis, but that would have to be determined by the designer on experience values. Such a fee should be based on a sliding scale, with larger projects being cheaper.
