I want to be a Stationary Designer…please help!?
Hello, I am very interested in becoming a freelance Stationary Designer (followed eventually by a retail shop)…I have a degree in business/marketing/advertising so I have the business and graphic design down. My sister wants to do this with me, she has a degree in Interior Design/Architecture, she’s very artsy and so she’s great with design too. This is something we’re seriously considering for a freelance job, then eventually would like to sell to retail shops and then have our own shop. Has anyone had any experience in this? How hard is it to break into the “stationary” world (Cards, stationary, business cards, letterhead, journals, etc) without being overwhelmed with Hallmark and such. We’re talking more of specialty design…not for the masses. Something unique & original. What program is your preference for design? QuarkXpress, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator or something else?? Thanks!!!
You and your sister need to start now making a morgue file of ideas. Sounds old fashioned, I know, but I use one on a weekly basis. It sparks ideas and, buy constantly adding to it you’ll be able to keep up with current trends.
Go on-line and do a search for printers and look at their examples. Pay attention to paper stock too. A nice bone classic laid paper may make a nicer letterhead than plain 20lb bond. If you were to use plain white paper you would want a brightness higher than 92. See where I’m headed with this? the desire, however is the important part. You girls will have to work hard to break into such a broad market, but you can do it !
Design one for yourselves and follow it all the way through production to print. Learn what decisions you’ll have to make for clients, etc. Ask a paper company for a paper samples.
If your going to have to have emboss or dyecut, most printers farm them out…how will that effect turn time? Lots to think about…BUT…you can do it ! Good Luck !
