Interior Design Firms Seattle
Unemployed Interior Designers in the Seattle area?

I don’t know about any of you, but I just can’t seem to find a job! I have 3 years of experience and have been very persistent, but this economy has everyone on a hiring freeze. What are you all doing to support yourselves during these tough times? I would love to start freelance work to keep myself going, but I don’t have the necessary contacts to follow through with my design services. I could offer the designs, but no way to implement them, and no discounts since I am not associated with a firm. Help! I need ideas!
Mup P, good thoughts- but this is not what interior designers do. You are thinking of an interior DECORATOR. Interior Designers are space planners- we work on paper and the computer most of the time. What you see in TV is not what we do in real life. I wouldn’t know how to wallpaper someone’s wall, and I’m not the tidyest painter. I could make recommendations, I suppose, but I cannot implement my design advice. That’s the job of the subcontractors.

You may be able to eek out a living selling your services to people who have their homes on the market.

Help them improve their marketability for a small fee to repaint or wallpaper the walls, window treatments, new fixtures, update their built-ins, redo their counter tops, put in a pool… okay, that last one was a little big, but you get the idea.

You don’t have to spend much on advertising – print up some good color fliers with a dramatic before/after shot of what you can do, and drop one at every house in town that has a for-sale sign. Most people won’t bite, but some will. Keep your prices reasonable and work on your salesmanship skills. Don’t be pushy, be helpful.

Form strategic alliances with guys who can do the labor – an electrician, a plumber, a carpenter, and a painter ought to cover 90% of anything you’d be up against. Having an impressive rolodex sets you apart from the flakes – and you can take a small referral fee for the business that you send their way, even if you don’t get to do any interior design work.

Periodically update the flier and re-canvas. Don’t worry if you hit a house twice, because if it is still on the market, they may decide to bring you in to help move it.

New Interior Design Business Ideas
know of any jobs for me?! please answer?

Okay, Im 19 and have been out of school for a year just trying to get my feet on the ground and save up for college. Im attending this august and just going to get my basics so far. Problem is, I DONT KNOW WHAT I WANT TO BE!!!! lol.

Ive thought of teaching, interior designing, starting my own business. I just dont know. Im REALLY good at decorating. I love and adore kids and im very good with them. Im very creative and love thinking up new ideas. I love photography, but ive never really tried actually doing it myself. . I hate getting up early and want my own schedule. obviously want to make decent money. i dont care if i make alot, just at least decent.

Please help me, I know it was long but im so confused! I cant thnk of anything! Thats an actual job that i can go to school for!

Thanks in advance

First and most important–DON’T PANIC. You do not have to make a major life decision now and stick with it for the rest of your life. Studies show that the average person will change jobs at least 5 times in their lives, and there are new jobs being invented all the time.

If you are having trouble deciding what you are most passionate about, take some time to make your decision. Do some volunteer work, take some special interest courses–some people find their passion in the place they least expected.

Go to your local government-run employment centre and ask for an interest and aptitude inventory. This computer exercise will take a couple of hours to complete, but the results will show you what types of careers most interest you and the ones you have a knack for. A qualified employment counsellor will help you to interpret these results and assist you in setting some education and career goals.

Also read the book, “I could do anything if only I knew what it was” by Barbara Sher. It has some helpful thinking and writing exercises you can use to make career decisions. Another book she has written specifically for people who can’t make decisions–she calls them Scanners–is called “Refuse to Choose” and helps people decide how to do everything they love to do. It should be available in your local bookstore, but check your library first to see if they have a copy.

Good luck!
