Interior Design advice in California?

I live in the Los Angeles Area and am looking to transfer from a Community College to a University or Cal State Spring 2009 (hopefully sooner).

I am looking for a reputable school for Interior Design that I can obtain a BFA in Interior Design/Architecture. I looked at CSUN but they offer a Bachelor’s in Family Science which I thought was weird. Of course there is OTIS and PARSONS which I would love to get into but couldn’t ever afford.

What options do I have? I need to stay within the area or at least within the State of California as I do not want to pay out of state tuition.

Any advice on schools, financing, scholarships?? I barely have a 3.0 GPA and after this semester it may go down a bit but I do have talent and already am building a pretty decent portfolio. Please share your thoughts….I need advice in a bad way.

Also, do designers have much success with certificates only?

My first question is…have you even tried applying to Otis? you’d be surprised at how giving they are with money. if you are worried about money…DONT! private schools give lots of grants n scholarships. you said it yourself that you have talent. Focus on your portfolio and maybe u can get in with honors (just based on your portfolio) and work part time at school. the school pays really well (and no taxes taken off)~ remember FAFSA is your best friend.
I went to Otis and was accepted with honors. I worked for the IT department and it was the easiest job ever! Dont ever worry about not being able to pay for your education. Otis will help you and even if you had to get a loan (it’s not the end of the world) think of it like a car payment later on. Big deal, you cant get a BMW later but at least you have your BFA (and that will set you apart from those other interior designers who dont have any art background) nowadays everyone claims they are interior designers…but without that foundation in art (or even art history) they are far behind than those w/ that solid education.
also, there are no licenses for interior designers and anyone can pretty much claim they are designers. maybe you can look into something more professional…like study architecture and do interiors on the side…
i went to Otis and they have a great program: architecture landscape n interiors and once you finish that program, maybe you can be interiors or even think of going further with it (like masters in architecture)
Good Luck…and seriously do not worry about money please~

ofcourse it’s easier said than done.
but Otis is great~ (hard work…prepare for bootcamp but well worth it)
