Colleges With Interior Design Degrees
Do I really need an interior design degree?
Hello i am a 30 year old woman who has a passion for interior decorating, and design. I would like to have a career in interior design with builder models, apartment models, and clubhouses. Also doing residential redecorating. I currently have no college degree. And I want one. However there are no degree programs for interior decorating/styling so the next best thing is design. However for my bachelors it is going to cost 80,000 at the Art Institute of Chicago to obtain my bachelors. Interior Designers is the degree worth it? Will it open more doors for me in this field?
Interior decorating is all about client connections and that isn’t necessarily something that you will get while pursuing a degree. If you are as good as you think you are, put together a portfolio of work you have done, for yourself, family, friends, etc., and then go sell yourself to decorating firms.
Decorators don’t need any kind of professional license like architects or interior designers and basically all they do is buy furniture and window treatments and recommend paint colors and fabrics then turn around and sell it to their clients at highly inflated prices. It is a good racket if you can get yourself into the right circle of people who are willing to pay for it.
So, is the degree in interior design, worth it? If you want to get into office layouts and bigger projects, then yes, but it sounds like you want to stay in the residential side, so it is a little harder to justify. Overall, if you aren’t sure what path to follow, schedule a meeting with a decorator and ask them for their professional advice.
Good luck.
