Interior Designing Tips Online
What should i say when bringing my resume in person to potential employers?

I graduated with a bachelor’s in Interior Design and I’m looking for a design assistant job with an architecture firm. I’ve been sending out lots of resumes online for several months now, but no luck yet. I wanna change my approach and start going to architecture firms and bring my resume in person, to see if this works better.

My problem is that I’m not sure what should I say once I get to their offices. I know I’ll be talking with a receptionist, but what should I say to her? How do I know she will give my resume to right person or that she will even remember to bring my resume to the Human Resources manager? Should I ask for the Human Resources manager instead? What are some key things that I should say during this visit?

Please help me. Any help or tips will be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Well you’re going to run into a few problems that will result in your resume being thrown away.

1) Just walking in and introducing yourself is great, but it’s better to send a networking or broadcast letter requesting for a lunch or a meeting to just talk.

2) You’re searching for something VERY specific. Try opening the search. You want to END at an architecture firm, but that doesn’t mean you’ll start there. You have a very specific degree that’s not in high demand. Can you afford to be without a job for 12-18 months?

3) If you really want to walk in and bring your resume in, I highly suggest making sure they have open positions. Some people will say to just walk in without a problem because it’s good for networking. That’s true, but what professional is really going to have time to listen to your speel if they don’t even have a job? The recepionist is going to take your resume, thank you very much and then trash it. You most likely won’t even get TO their offices.

4) Network. You never know where a job will take you. Let’s say you’re working as a display design consultant at Kohls; you could still be hunting for that dream job.
