Best Interior Design University Programs
University of Cincinnati vs. Ball State University?
Hey all, I’ve got more college questions.
So I got into the interior design program at the University of Cincinnati (DAAP). It is ranked number one in the nation- what a great opportunity!
However, I’m still on the fence about architecture vs. interior design. I got into Ball State’s architecture program, which is no where near as well know as DAAP’s. But, I can minor in interior design to get the best of both worlds.
So if you all were me, what would you do? I know BSU offers the major and minor, but how can I walk away from the number one program in the nation?
Any input/thoughts on these schools/advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
I am a BSU architecture student, and I have worked along side of UC arch & int. design students. It depends what you’re looking for. BSU is now a 4+2 program, meaning at the end of 4 years you’ll have a pre-prof Bachelor of Science degree, meaning you cannot get a professional license unless you continue on to graduate school (and they do offer a good grad program too). UC has a 5 year professional Bachelor of Architecture, meaning at the end of 5 years, you CAN become licensed.
Both are great architecture schools, BSU more rounded focus (as in a balance between theory and technical info) whereas UC is definately a technically-oriented program. UC, I will say, definately has a much better int. design program! BSU’s int. design is NOT associated with the arch dept! And the BSU int dsn students that I know are not of the calibre of the UC students I know in terms of what they know and what they can do!
However, as an architect, you can design interiors as well. But as an interior designer only, you cannot design any other part of the building, so you become rather pegged in my opinion. If you get an architecture degree, you’ll have the design training and eye, and with an int dsn minor you’ll learn the ins and outs of interiors.
But definately visit both schools!! BSU gives tours of the campus and of the arch building daily and will be more than happy to answer any specific questions. But do consider the city: Muncie is not Cincinnati and cannot offer the perks of big city living! However, Muncie was rated the least expensive college town! I don’t know if you’ll be in-state or out-of-state for either school, but BSU is definately the best bargain, with top-notch quality for rock-bottom price!
Don’t just look at rankings (I was actually told by one of my professors that those rankings are just based on colleges that have internship/co-op programs). Ball State’s arch program was rated 13th a couple years ago but was dropped because they no long have internship built in to the cirriculum, even though everything else stayed the same.
So in short, if you want a definate answer, I would say go to BSU!
