How hard is it to get a job in the Graphic Design field?

I’m currently majoring in the field of Graphic Design, I love it, and I’m finishing out my first year, so far it’s been very easy and I’ve been on The Dean’s List every semester (which is quite a surprise since in high school I was averaging C’s and D’s). I’m just wondering how hard it will be to find a job once I get out of college. I live in Ohio, if that’ll better help with answering I’m not sure.

Also was this a safer career choice over Fashion Design or Interior Design, or does it fall into about the same risk zone?

Congratulations on your good grades in Graphic Design. It looks like you have found the field that’s just right for you.

If you are completely dedicated to this field, then you will immerse yourself in it, and by the time you graduate, you will have the skills you need to get a good job in graphic design.

Once you are in the job market, you need to have a diverse portfolio to show what you can do. While you won’t make a big salary at the entry level, if you have excellent creative skills, you can move up quickly. “Good money” comes about 3-4 years after you graduate, if you have the talent.

There are a number of cities in Ohio with very large markets for Graphic Design. Cincinnati, Columbus, Cleveland, Dayton, Toledo, etc. have a large number of advertising agencies and graphic design firms. In addition, many good printers have their own design department. Work hard, give it all you have, and you won’t have any trouble finding a job.

My opinion is that you made a very good decision in choosing Graphic Design over Fashion Design or Interior Design. Neither has the long-term job potential offered by Graphic Design.

Good luck.

Can I be an Interior Designer/Consultant in Dallas?

I am wondering if I have good enough ideas to be an interior designer or consultant in Dallas. I am in graduate school, but have always loved to decorate. I have worked in home decor stores in the past, and know how to assemble the most daunting of pieces, even Ikea. I don’t want to be professional, but I can see myself shopping with clients and helping them with ideas or looking at homes, rooms, and designing concepts on my own. I just am not sure what would be the best way to go about it, or even if I have ideas and taste enough to be desired by others. I made a post on Craigslist, and will put a link so you can see the pictures of some of my work. I just don’t know the best avenue. I’d appreciate any advice. Thanks.

I love your work. It looks like you definitely have the knack for decorating. The pictures I saw, showed me you like contemporary style/modern style versus traditional. Your color choices were excellent and you stuck with the “odd” number for your shelf display (which is a good rule of thumb). You have good enough ideas, now you need to believe in yourself. You can take classes if you want to learn more techniques, even through the mail. Probably even on-line. You are good at this. Don’t give up, even if it’s part-time to see how you like it. Test the waters before jumping in. You already have a good background and with decorating, it is something you have deep inside. It’s like with some people it just comes naturally. Good luck. I wish you the best.

Where should I transfer schools?

I go to school in NY, i’m a junior and I wanna transfer out to a diff state. I’ve lived in NY all my life and I wanted to go out somewhere a little less crazy. lol I go to school in the city. I havent done much travelling in the states, so I don’t know where some good schools would be. I’m looking for a big school, not too diverse in either the west side. Anywhere from Colorado, to Arizona to California. I mean somewhere not completely isolated, but fun. Where the weather is cold, or even Canada. My major is business as of right now but i’m thinking of doing interior design also. If you know of any schools in those areas with the 2 majors then please let me know. I wanna go to a state that’s fun and not totally diverse. I went to Colorado and loved Denver. California is my fav too, but I only really liked Southern Cal. Florida’s nice too, but it’s too crowded and prob a lot like NY. So tell me what you guys think ..any ideas of where I should transfer too?

Take a look at the University of Oregon in Eugene. 1 hour from the ocean, 1 hour from the mountains, beautiful area, nice town.

What is needed etc. to go to America myself and study there?

I have 15 years of age .. almost 16 years old and live in Spain, but I see no future for me in Europe and I feel like all my dreams come true in the United States .. I've always wanted to go to the U.S.! I know I'm too young, but when I'm 18/19 I want to live there to study College and the University, including interior design, etc, because I love to be in the Extreme Makeover Home Edition, you can express your self in the United States not only here, that could get in GCSE English, Spanish and mathematics .. and other evidence Spanish .. so yes, the point is, when I'm 18 .. What do I have to do and what is involved? need help, thanks (:

A From the fall of his senior year in high school, you can begin applying for admission to American universities. You must apply to each university for separately and usually will cost you a fee for each one of them, so just choose the ones you are serious about and think you have a good chance to enter. Most Applications can be made online, but you may need a teacher to write a recommendation letter to send to universities and their academic record containing all your GCSE grades and mailed to the school. If it is accepted that the school will send documentation to help you begin to apply for a student visa you can legally enter the U.S. to enter college. Also be aware that your parents or another person can have the money to provide financial support during the whole this large are rare scholarships. For an international student, the average cost of four years study at an American university is about U.S. $ 160,000.
