Interior Design Singapore
Hi I would like to know more about the job situation of an interior designer here in Singapore.?
Well, i am struggling between whether to take up a Diploma in Interior Design or In Business instead. I always love Interior Designing and architecture designing but was told that the market is rather small for an interior designer to survive here in Singapore. So i am considering of taking up Business instead. So that i will have more opportunities in future. However, deep inside my heart, i know i wouldn’t be happy if i never go into what i like. Can someone please give me some advise? Preferably someone who is or was an interior designer to tell me more about the job and prospect of being an interior designer here in Singapore.
well i have been in the line for 10 yrs now , have been both in interior and exhibition and event industry.so this is what i have to share with you.
If being an interior Designer is your passion and you think it is really what you wanna do and you can make it big, go for it ….However , the market for interior Designers are very different.. it depends how you market yourself and luck in getting a job with a reputable design company.
salaries for Interior designers can range anything from $1500 to $7000 to owning your own design consultancy. let’s say in your initial yrs of graduating from a reputable school , many days of hard work , sweat and tears and sometimes blood … i have cut myself loads of times…, be prepared to earn a minimum salary for abt 3 yrs before really asserting your design flair in the market… if you are stuck in a neighbourhood design contractor type of company you be on the lower scale of the market with nothing much to design and constrained creativity… if you end up in an architecture company or a reputable design agency chances are you find yourself moving up the ladder and eventually either you get tired of the many stressful datelines and late nights eating away at your health.or you make it big.
in Design it’s not only abt flair and talent, but it’s also endurance… and how you are able to market your design , tots and execution … a give of the gab also helps if you eventually end up being a sales person.
If it’s for Glamour that you wanna be a Designer, Please stay away for you will be disappointed… in short , it’s what you make out of it, it’s not something simple and being a designer is loads of hard work…. it would be the same in any job but being a Designer you have to be really quick and have loads of energy to keep up with the industry…
that said i wish you all the best in making your decision to choose but i am a senior design manager after 10 yrs and am happy however there are days i wish i could have my little cafe business in australia…. and watch the world go by..

Interior Design Portfolio Book
how big you sketch book has to be to prepare a portfolio?
I have to prepare a portfolio, I’m applying for interior design at fit and right know the book that I’m using is 9″x12″(229mm x 305mm) is it good
I’m sorry I don’t really understand your question. Are you applying for a school or a professional job?
Either way, the dimensions of your sketchbook don’t really matter. It’s the quality of the work inside that counts.
If you are applying for a school, a basic understanding of the fundamental skills in your particular field are really all you need.
If you are applying for a job, I would recommend an actual portfolio with at least a dozen strong pieces that show off your skills, talents and personal flair. Perhaps half of them should be tailored to reflect that company’s style of design, and half to more show off how you yourself express your creativity in original and exciting ways.
Either way, the size of the paper you’re using is largely irrelevant.
