The Interior Design Process
Be honest, is psychology worth pursuing?

I have wanted to go into psychology when I go into college for years. But I’ve had other ideas of what I’ve wanted to do [[Interior Design, Biology...]] I want to know first-hand from people that have gone through the college process of becoming a psychologist, what they think.

Thanks!

95% of the students that take psychology as a major do so because they secretly want to know what is wrong with them, or if they are normal.

99.9% of the students that graduate with a psychology degree never get a job in the field, or get a job and quit after they find out how very difficult it is to deal with the hardships of the job (dealing with emotional/economic/societal issues of the emotionally disturbed).

The realization that the problems are so overwhelming and so underfunded (at the entry level) and that no matter how much you try you will not make an impact or even a difference causes most entry level psychologists to find another line of work. The best and brightest can be ground up and spit out in a matter of months. This is why the field is filled with the uncaring and the unqualified (two survival techniques currently at play)…

The other .01% make great money. But they probably will never get their hands dirty and landed in the top pay range because of who they know, not what they can do.

Seriously consider another choice unless you truly care for the least capable and the least defended among us and have the emotional fortitude to carry the world on your back for the rest of your career. Or else open a private practice off the bat where you take money from people who really don’t need help, just a paid listener.

Good luck.

P.S. Freud is completely irrelevant at this point and time. Be sure to let your professors know that they can stop pretending… In fact you are allowed to laugh at them with derision every time they bring out their hallowed relics… Three laughs entitles you to escalate to bitch slapping them… Your responsibility is to stay focused on what brings results and what is relevant to 21st century care. That may entail brushing off some dust.
