Interior Design or Human Resources?
I’m planning to go back to school. But I’m up in the air about what to major in. I have an interest in both interior design and HR. I just wanted to get some opinions on which one I should go for. I would love to hear from people in both fields or who majored in one or the other. Which do you think will have the better job market once I finish in about two years?
Well, both of them are so different, but I think that Human Resources would be a better choice. I say that because virtually all businesses, companies, hospitals, any place of employment has a human resources department, you can work pretty much for any type of company. You could even be the director of human resources for an interior design company. I was once an interior design major and although it was nice at times, it’s definitely a lot of work, and very tedious. I had to take architecture courses along with it. After a while, I learned that I didn’t have the patience for it. However, that was me, not you. I have a friend who it trying to launch her own interior design company. She majored in Art in High school, and went on to study interior design in college. She has a passion for design, but It has been very difficult for her to find clientele as the average everyday person doesn’t really feel that they need someone to do their interior designing. The closet jobs that she’s been able to find has been doing things like kitchen design for places like Home Depot, etc., I do think that Interior Design is a field that you can do well in if you are in a good location such as LA, or New York, but that’s just my opinion. Again, as far as the market, I still think that Human Resources is a better choice.

Interior Design Portfolio
Help with an interior design portfolio?
I’ve always had aspirations of studying Interior Design and hopefully turning it into a career. I was talked out of it and decided to get my BA in Internatinal Relations. Well, Im thinking of going back to school to do two Master’s programs, one being in Interior Design. They want a portfolio submitted and Im not sure how to go about it. What should a portfolio look like and what type of images should I submit? Are there any good programs or software that could be of great help? Thanks.
I graduated with an ID degree a few years ago. You don’t really need software. They just want to see you have the talent to further develop it, so show ANY artwork – people, plants, buidligns, animals, etc. Although you shoould already have all this if you’ve seriously considered a career in interior design. If you do want to submit comoputerized things, try photoshop. Otherwise, you’ll learn CAD and revit in school. If you try to rush a portfolio, they’ll know.
