I have to write two pages of interviews from two different people IN THE INTERIOR DESIGN CAREER for school, and I don’t know any interior designers in person. after answering my questions, can you please leave your real name? Thank you.
1. What is a typical day like for an Interior Designer?
2. What kind of things do you learn/do in college to prepare yourself to be an Interior Designer?
3. If you are self employed, what were some things that you did to get your name out? if not, what do you think are some good strategies to do so?
4. What is the starting salary of an Interior Designer?
5. Do you think that even with the economy now, Interior Designers have job security?
6. What are some things I can do in High School to prepare me to study Interior Design in College?
7. What are some difficulties of being an interior designer?
8. In home design, what is the most common thing people want remodeled?
1. An Interior Designer has many duties, including meetings with clients, measuring and making lots of notes and taking pictures. Then lots of sketching and drawing, finishes selections and LOTS of phone calls to get pricing and place orders. Once the project has begun, many visits to the job site to be sure everything is going well. If you have several clients, you might do all of these things in one day, and more.
2. There are various Interior Design programs around the US, some specialize more in architectural and construction techniques, while others are more “decorator” progams with lots of textiles and furniture design. Depends on the program you are in, and the degree you are seeking.
3. I’m not self-employed so I don’t have to do any marketing, but I imagine it’s just like any other self-employed person. Having a website is probably one of the best things you can do, and of course there’s word of mouth.
4. Starting salary is entirely dependant on the part of the country and what your first job is going to be. Interior Design magazine has an annual report on salaries that you can look up.
5. Self-employed people in any field are having a tougher time now than employees of large, stable companies.
6. Math skills, communication skills and CAD drawing skills are good things to start with.
7. Dealing with individuals in residential design is one of the hardest things in my opinion, as you are trying to please someone’s subjective opinion, based on personal taste. Some people are just hard to please, and there’s no real right and wrong with design – just what you like or don’t like.
8. I think bathrooms and kitchens are the most common remodel projects these days.
