Why was everyone so obsessed with space in the 1980′s? It seemed to dominate pop culture and life.?

The movies, games, books, etc… so many of them about space/technology/the future. Why was that? Computers, technology, space flight all seemed to have such a bigger mystique than they do now. It seems like society then was so much more oriented towards the whole sci-fi phenomenon especially when compared to today’s society. Every interior design and music looked and sounded so much more futuristic and high-tech than they do today. Does anyone have an opinion on why this was?
