Career change to interior decorator?

I am an apartment manager, who wants to follow a dream of interior decorating and/or designing. I am almost 30 and to date I have redecorated apartment home models, a couple of spaces for my friends, and my highly complimented own home. This past weekend I won an award from the chicagoland apartment associtation for best 2 bedroom model done my a non certified designer. Which was a huge deal to me. However I want to do this professionally, on my own, and need to know where to begin. I need to still work full time while making this transition, so quitting my cuurent career is not an option. Also, what can I expect salary wise in this field? I am most interested in home staging and models for builders.

Since you have to keep your full time job, interning with an experienced designer is not an option. What you need to do is to start building a portfolio. You already have your awards, and hopefully some pictures of the the units you’ve won them for. There are several ways to build your portfolio. One is volunteering your services. Habitat for Humanity is one such worthy cause. They build homes for needy people and you can donate your design time using the donated items. Be sure to take pictures of the before and after, but this is a challenge for beginning desigers to basically show that you are able to use what is available. In addition, take on projects for non-profits, friends, family, anyone willing to take a chance on you. This will build a referral business in addition to giving you real world experience, budgeting, and running the business end of design. Make contacts with builders in your area, have cards and brochures outlining and showing your work to leave. Start with the small independent builders as most of the majors either have their own in house designers or work with established design houses that have the ability to work multiple projects simultaneously. The sky is the limit in terms of income, it depends on how many clients you take on in a year, so you basically dictate the income you want to make. Also, be sure to get all of the business licenses, permits and the tax free wholesale card which enables you to not only shop “to the trade” but also waives the sales tax until the goods are re-sold. Good luck, design is a very fulfilling and lucrative business.

interior design help?

I have a medium sized bedroom and I am refurnishing it and repainting it. My plan is to give a contemporary look with some ikea furniture and a clean look. My main question is what should my secondary color for my walls be? i want my main color to be a silver grey (already chosen & painted) and im not sure what color for another wall. i dont want all the walls the same color. also, my accent color will be black. such as the furniture, wall trim and possibly outlets (is that too much?)

im 20 y/o, male (if that makes any difference lol)

Go silver metallic paint. It will take the gloom out of the room without making it look all wierd. The mettalic paint looks great with lighting too. http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_HnNUBzWWCrQ/SvUG4d_WALI/AAAAAAAAADg/0CojZ3REmn0/s400/912441235768054.jpg

To add color put these on your night stands. http://technabob.com/blog/2009/06/24/led-color-changing-flat-panels-perfect-for-home-discos/
