So here’s my story.. I live in Oregon (just some background info) and graduated high school in 2010 with a 3.3 gpa. Pretty average. I graduated on time while taking care of my one year old son with all my credits except algebra 2b I got a D and college doesn’t accept that I heard? Anyway, im currently working a minimum wage job as a waitress and I am so tired of feeling like a failure, I want to go to school and have a career. I have always been interested in interior design, marketing and advertising but not only can I not go to a university at the moment due to my child, I can’t afford a community college. I dont know where to start or who to talk to, I need help with financial aid, and all of the above. I need so guidance as to what my options are and maybe so opinions in the field of work im interested in..

1.) A 3.3 is not just average, it’s good! It is certainly enough to qualify you for some scholarships.
2.) You will qualify for lots of aid and scholarships. Financial aid is need based, so if you are independent from your parents, you’ll get a lot more.
3.) Don’t feel like you have to go full time. Start with one class at a community college. It will require 2-3 nights a week, but it’s not too costly, and will give you time to work and spend time with your son.
4.) You don’t need a four year degree to start. Check with your local community college for Career Studies Certificates (CSCs) or Associates Degrees. Some certificates can give you a head start on a degree and qualify you for an entry level job, while only taking 1 year to complete.
Most importantly, don’t feel like you can’t do this. Community colleges will have counselors to help with planning and financial aid, and with some patience and drive, you’ll do great.
